Aerospace Acquisition Requires Moving Google Workspace Content to Microsoft 365

Acquisitions are difficult on employees in both companies, but they are made even more difficult when they involve transitioning to a different productivity solution. There are very different features available in solutions like Google Workplace versus Microsoft 365 and organizations have wide variations in how they tag or label data within these solutions.

So when a migration happens from one solution to another, a lot of preparation is required to understand the data and change or add appropriate labels. This will allow users to find their data and collaborate without the added frustration.

The Challenges of Moving from Google to Microsoft

At DryvIQ, we’re currently working with two aerospace and defense organizations to help handle the data migration for an acquisition. The organization being acquired leveraged Google Workspace as their productivity solution, but they weren’t utilizing labeling or tags for data classification in the way the acquiring organization was.

The organization acquiring them uses Microsoft 365 for workplace productivity. In order to move the Google Workspace content into this new environment, they had to have their content labeled appropriately.

This was especially important since data privacy regulations are top of mind for the acquiring company who is working to ensure GDPR and Schrems II ruling compliance. They needed a way to appropriately identify and label content while also finding potentially sensitive information to ensure they could make good decisions to appropriately store and protect the data.

Using an Intelligent Data Migration Solution to Automate Identification and Labeling

The organization taking on the newly acquired data (and newly acquired risk) was not able to find any solutions within the Google ecosystem to help them proactively classify and label information, so they came to DryvIQ for its robust data migration and management solution.

With DryvIQ, they were able to assess the acquired company’s unstructured data in order to identify the various types of information and label them proactively. They also utilized DryvIQ’s pre-trained artificial intelligence to discover sensitive information within their dark data.

DryvIQ enabled the application of the classification labels and tags to match how they were using the Microsoft 365 data architecture. DryvIQ also automated the migration of the content to make for a seamless transition for the employees of the acquired company.

The Biggest Value Was Lowered Risk of Non-Compliance

DryvIQ gave the acquiring organization what they needed—an accurate way to identify and label the acquired information for a smooth migration. But the real value they experienced was the discovery of a large amount of sensitive information that was unclassified.

They quickly realized that some of the business data they had acquired would have added unnecessary risk had they done a traditional lift and shift migration. Seeing how DryvIQ was able to look into all of the unstructured data and identify sensitive information lowered their risk and gave them peace of mind that they weren’t creating new data regulation problems.

Don’t migrate old problems to new platforms.
